At 3:15, the minute hand points to 15 × 6 = 90°. The hour hand has moved past 3 o'clock: (3 × 30) + (15 × 0.5) = 90 + 7.5 = 97.5°. The angle between them is |97.5 − 90| = 7.5°.
The hour hand moves 0.5° per minute and the minute hand moves 6° per minute; the calculator finds the absolute difference between their positions (and the smaller of the two possible angles).
90° — the classic example, since the hour hand is at the 3 (90° from 12) and the minute hand is at the 12 (0°).
The hour hand moves gradually between hour marks as minutes pass, not just at the top of each hour, which is why the angle calculation needs the minutes value too.
