Find exactly how many grams of coffee to use for your preferred brew strength.
Coffee-to-water ratio is the simplest way to control brew strength — this calculator tells you exactly how many grams of coffee to use for a given amount of water at your preferred ratio.
Coffee (g) = Water (ml) ÷ Ratio Denominator. For example, at a 1:16 ratio, Coffee = Water ÷ 16, since 1 ml of water weighs approximately 1 gram.
Brewing 500 ml of water at a 1:16 ratio needs about 31.3 g of coffee (500 ÷ 16).
Specialty coffee guides generally recommend ratios between 1:15 and 1:18 depending on roast and brew method — pour-over often leans toward 1:16–1:17, while French press can go stronger.
It's the proportion of coffee grounds to water used for brewing, commonly expressed like 1:16 (1 gram of coffee per 16 grams/ml of water).
The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) suggests a range of roughly 1:15 to 1:18 depending on brew method and taste preference, with stronger ratios for espresso.
Enter your desired ratio and total water (or coffee) amount, and it calculates the matching amount of the other ingredient to keep the strength consistent.
