Add tax to a price, or work backward from a tax-inclusive price to find the original amount.
This calculator adds or removes sales tax (or VAT) from a price. It works both ways: enter a pre-tax price to find the final price, or enter a tax-inclusive price to find how much of it was tax.
An item costs $100 before a 15% VAT. Tax = 100 × 0.15 = $15. Total price = $115. If instead $115 already includes 15% VAT, the pre-tax price is 115 ÷ 1.15 = $100, and the tax portion is $15.
Useful for shoppers checking receipts, freelancers invoicing clients, and businesses calculating VAT or sales tax for pricing, bookkeeping, or budgeting.
Sales tax = purchase price × tax rate; total = price + tax.
It's typically set by combined state, county, and city governments, each adding their own rate.
The same percentage-based math applies to VAT calculations used in many countries.
