About the Stock Profit & Loss Calculator

The Stock Profit & Loss Calculator works out how much you made or lost on a trade, after accounting for the number of shares and any broker commissions.

It gives you both the dollar amount and the percentage return, so you can compare the performance of different trades on equal footing.

How to Use This Calculator

Formula

Profit = (Sell Price × Shares) − (Buy Price × Shares) − Commissions. Percentage Return = Profit ÷ Total Cost Basis × 100.

Example

Buying 100 shares at $50 and selling at $65, with $10 in total commissions, gives a net profit of $1,490 — a return of about 29.8% on the $5,000 cost basis.
