This calculator estimates your federal income tax using a simplified progressive tax bracket system, similar to how most modern income tax systems work. In a progressive system, your income is not taxed at a single flat rate — instead, each portion of your income that falls inside a bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. This is why your "marginal rate" (the rate on your last dollar earned) is usually higher than your "effective rate" (the average rate across all your income).
Taxable Income = Gross Income − Standard Deduction − Additional Deductions. The calculator then applies simplified progressive brackets (loosely based on common U.S. federal brackets) to the taxable income, taxing each slice of income at its own rate and summing the results:
Tax = Σ (income in bracket × bracket rate)
Suppose a single filer earns $65,000 with no extra deductions. After subtracting the standard deduction, their taxable income falls partly in the 10% bracket and partly in the 12% bracket. The calculator sums the tax owed in each bracket to give a total estimated tax, then divides that by gross income to show the effective rate — typically well below the marginal (top) bracket rate.
